Subject: Urgent Representation on Worker Safety Following Fatal Accident at Sumadhura Vasantham Apartments, Seetharampalya, Hoodi, Bengaluru

Respected Sir,

I am writing to bring to your urgent attention a tragic incident that occurred on August 4, 2025, at Sumadhura Vasantham Apartments, Seetharampalya, Hoodi, Bengaluru, where a painter lost his life after falling from a height while engaged in exterior painting work. This case was reported prominently by the city press, drawing attention to the shocking lack of safety measures at the site [2].

This accident underscores the serious gaps in the enforcement of worker safety protocols at construction and maintenance sites in Bengaluru. Every day, thousands of laborers and skilled professionals put their lives at risk while contributing to the city’s growth. However, the absence of strict safety measures continues to expose them to life-threatening hazards.

According to data published in The Times of India, between 2015 and 2019 alone, 313 construction workers died in Bengaluru—an average of five fatalities every month [1]. More recently, in Whitefield itself, another painter fell to his death from the fifth floor of a well-known builder’s residential project [3].

These repeated incidents — including the Aug 4 Sumadhura tragedy [2] and the recent Whitefield fatality [3] — illustrate a disturbing pattern of negligence. International benchmarks (e.g., Singapore’s 3.7 fatalities per 100,000 workers in construction) demonstrate that with rigorous safety enforcement, such incidents can be drastically reduced. Bengaluru must act urgently to prevent more such tragedies.

In light of this, I humbly request the authorities to take the following urgent actions:

Mandate strict safety protocols at all construction and maintenance sites, including compulsory use of helmets, harnesses, nets, and other protective gear.
Introduce mandatory safety training and drills for all contract workers before they are deployed on-site.
Strengthen monitoring and enforcement, ensuring BBMP and Labour Department inspectors regularly audit sites.
Impose strict penalties and accountability measures on builders, contractors, agencies and associations/committees violating safety norms.
Create a city-wide framework for worker safety, including awareness campaigns and helplines for reporting unsafe practices.
The loss of life on August 4 at Sumadhura Vasantham Apartments [2], together with the recent Whitefield fatality [3] and past statistics [1], must serve as a wake-up call. By implementing the above measures, Bengaluru can safeguard its workforce and prevent further avoidable deaths.

I earnestly request immediate intervention from your esteemed office to protect the lives of countless workers who are the backbone of our city’s development.

Sincerely,
Shravan Reddy
Resident of Whitefield, Bengaluru
