The Issue

My son, a middle school student in Cumberland County, has endured relentless bullying and harassment at his schools, Westover and Douglas Byrd. Over the years, he has faced bullying, harassment, and theft from other students. His experiences have deeply affected his mental health, leading to depression and even suicidal thoughts. Despite our efforts to seek help from the schools, they did nothing to protect him or address these issues.

Unfortunately, my son's experience is not unique. Many parents have shared similar stories of their children suffering from bullying, harassment, and theft. These behaviors create an environment where learning and personal growth are overshadowed by fear and anxiety. Special needs students are particularly vulnerable, with their unique challenges often ignored, making it even more imperative for a proactive approach.

We urgently need a policy change to protect our children. It is imperative that Cumberland County implements strict policies for expulsion concerning bullying, stealing, and harassment of middle school students, particularly focusing on general education and special needs students. Such policies should include clear definitions of bullying and harassment, as well as guidelines for school administrators to follow when these situations arise. Students should be aware of the repercussions of their actions, and parents should be informed of all proceedings involving their children.

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, about 20% of students aged 12–18 experience bullying nationwide. This statistic is alarming and highlights the need for decisive action to ensure that Cumberland County schools are safe places for all students.

Implementing these policies would serve as a deterrent, help reduce incidents of bullying, and create a supportive and safe environment for all students, especially those with special needs. It would ensure that all students have the opportunity to learn and grow without fear, thus positively impacting their overall well-being and academic success.

Please sign this petition to urge the Cumberland County School Board to take immediate and decisive action to implement strict expulsion policies for bullying, stealing, and harassment in our schools. Together, we can make a difference and protect our children from further harm.
