Implement Speed Cameras and Enhance Pedestrian Safety on North Avenue
The Issue
I am a resident deeply concerned by the reckless driving that plagues North Avenue, between California Ave and Kimball Ave. Just a year ago, an SUV, speeding over 100 miles an hour, crashed into the front wall of the local smoke shop. Thankfully no one was in the building at the time but it shows how dangerous that road is to all residents. These incidents are neither isolated nor infrequent, and point to a burgeoning crisis of safety in our neighborhood.
National data illustrate a grim picture of the consequences of speeding. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was a contributing factor in 26% of all fatal accidents in the U.S. in 2019. Also, the World Health Organization reports that pedestrians have a 90% survival rate if hit by a car traveling at 20 mph or below, but less than a 50% chance of surviving an impact at 45 mph. These alarming statistics clearly communicated how desperately we need measures to curb speeding, protect pedestrians and enhance road safety on North Avenue.
We call for immediate action from the alderman! The installation of speed cameras, proven successful in other parts of the country, could be one potential solution. Further, improving pedestrian crosswalks and educating the community on traffic safety are essential steps in creating a safer environment for all residents.
We urge our city officials to prioritize pedestrian safety and implement measures to control reckless driving on North Avenue. Please, sign this petition to support these crucial changes. Thank you and stay safe out there.
