The picture above is my daughter with her Cat “Gizmo” she was fatally struck by a speeding car Saturday 4/20/2024 we are residents of Winder, GA, and I am deeply concerned about the safety of our community. The speed limit on our street is 25mph, yet we frequently observe drivers going double this limit or even more. We see speeders all day and night on this straight stretch of road in our little dead end neighborhood. We have Ring cameras that video all day long and you can see how fast they are going. The speeders vary from people who live in the back of the subdivision, to their friends/family, delivery drivers/ mail carriers and even our local school bus drivers! This reckless behavior has already resulted in the tragic loss of two beloved family pets. With every speeding car that passes by, I fear that next time it could be a child. We are terrified to let our children play in the front yard, ride bicycles and walk our pets in the subdivision and so are other families on this road.

Our residential streets are not racetracks. They are where our children play and our families live out their daily lives. It's time we took measures to ensure their safety. Speed bumps or stop signs can significantly reduce the speed at which vehicles travel down our roads.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), speed bumps have been shown to reduce vehicle speeds by 40%. Moreover, studies have found that stop signs can decrease accidents by up to 72% (Federal Highway Administration). These simple interventions could make a world of difference in preventing potential tragedies.

I implore you to consider implementing these changes for the sake of all residents here in our subdivision - especially for those who are too young or too small to protect themselves from speeding vehicles. I grew up on this street and it’s been an issue for decades  Please sign this petition if you believe in making our streets safer places for everyone who calls them home.
