Implement Speed Bumps and Flashing Crossing Lights in Palomar Elementary School Zone
The Issue
As a concerned parent whose children attend Palomar Elementary School. I am deeply worried about their safety during their daily commute. My children have been close to getting hit by speeding vehicles or vehicles refusing to do the stop signs, multiple times. The lack of speed bumps and flashing crossing lights in the school zone poses a significant risk to our children's safety.
Every day, hundreds of children walk to and from school, crossing busy streets that are frequented by fast-moving vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 100 child pedestrians are killed while walking to or from school each year nationwide. This is an alarming statistic that we cannot ignore.
By installing speed bumps and flashing crossing lights in our school zone, we can significantly reduce these risks. Speed bumps have been proven effective at slowing down vehicles; according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), they can reduce vehicle speeds by as much as 40%. Flashing crossing lights also play a crucial role in alerting drivers of pedestrian crossings ahead.
We urge the City Council of Chula Vista to prioritize our children's safety by implementing these necessary measures immediately. Let us ensure that all students at Palomar Elementary School can safely commute each day without fear.
