St. Johns County, famous for its beautiful beaches, draws thousands of visitors each year. These public spaces should be kept clean and safe for everyone to enjoy. However, discarded cigarette butts and vape residue are not only an environmental hazard but also pose serious health concerns. According to CDC, secondhand smoke from cigarettes and vapes contain harmful metals, chemicals, and toxins that are harmful to both humans and wildlife. Besides, WHO states that cigarette butts are considered the most littered item across the globe, contributing immensely to pollution. We, the residents and lovers of St. Johns County, call for the implementation of smoke-free regulations on our beaches. A smokeless beach is a step towards better health and a cleaner environment for us all. Therefore, we urge the local government to enact legislation banning smoking, including the use of cigarettes and vapes, on all St. Johns County beaches.
