Implement Safety Measures on the White Bridge to Prevent Suicides

The Issue

In July 2023 we lost our son to suicide on the White Bridge in Glenrothes, Fife. His loss has left a void that can never be filled but his memory inspires us to fight for change and prevent such tragedies from happening again.

The bridge is currently too accessible with low railings making it easy for individuals in distress to access the other side. This accessibility has led to frequent closures due to suicide attempts.

We propose higher railings or safety netting as preventative measures on this bridge. These modifications can act as deterrents and provide crucial extra time for intervention when someone is contemplating ending their life.

In the UK alone, over 6,500 people die by suicide each year (source: Samaritans). Each one of these deaths is a tragedy that devastates families, friends and communities. They are also an indication of what can happen when people struggle with mental health issues without receiving adequate support.

By implementing these safety measures on the White Bridge we could potentially save lives and spare other families from experiencing our pain. We urge local authorities in Glenrothes to take immediate action towards improving safety measures at this location.

In memory of our boy who will be forever 19 and of others who lost their lives at this bridge - let's make a change together so no one else feels they have no other choice but suicide. Please sign this petition and help us bring light into darkness.
