Implement Safety Measures Along Highway 160 for Wild Horses and Public Protection

The Issue

We are a local advocacy group, Fred’s Posse Wild Horse and Burro Outreach and Advocacy  in Pahrump, NV, dedicated to the protection of our beloved wild horses and burros. Recently, we have witnessed several accidents along Highway 160 from Simkins Road to Johnnie Curve that have proven lethal for these majestic creatures and posed significant danger to the public.

This stretch of highway is a high-risk area for vehicle versus horse and burro incidents. The lack of fencing allows these animals to wander onto the road, leading to tragic accidents that could be prevented with proper safety measures in place.

We propose the installation of fencing along this area of Highway 160. Additionally, street lighting should be installed in areas where horse and burro crossings are frequent. Flashing danger signs would alert drivers about potential animal crossings ahead while cattle guards could prevent these animals from entering dangerous traffic zones.

According to data from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), there were over 500 reported wildlife-vehicle collisions in Nevada in 2019 alone (NDOT). This figure underscores not only the threat posed to our wildlife but also highlights a significant public safety issue.

We urge you to take action now before more lives - both human and animal - are lost on this stretch of highway. Please sign this petition urging local authorities to implement necessary safety measures along Highway 160 from Simkins Road to Johnnie Curve for both wild horses' protection and public safety.
