Implement Rent Caps for Affordable Housing

Implement Rent Caps for Affordable Housing
The Issue
Being homeless myself, I have experienced firsthand the struggle of securing affordable housing. In many cities around the world, rents are skyrocketing, often leaving tenants teetering on the edge of homelessness. For many, a consistent increase in rent price leads to a disastrous financial situation that fosters a vicious cycle of homelessness, unemployment, and despair. We have to put an end to this.
Data from the National Low Income Housing Coalition demonstrates that in 2020, renters need to earn at least $23.96 per hour to afford a modest two-bedroom rental home, or $19.54 for a one-bedroom. These figures are nearly triple and double the federal minimum wage, respectively. This underlines the critical disconnect between wages and the cost of housing, demonstrating an untenable situation for many.
Thus, we call for the implementation of rent caps, a regulation that places a limit on how much landlords can raise rent for existing tenants annually. Rent cap policies have the potential to protect millions from housing cost burdens and homelessness, promoting stable communities and preserving diversity.
It is time local government authorities recognize this necessity, empowering vulnerable residents like myself with a more equitable chance at life. By implementing rent caps, we can ensure that everyone can afford to have a safe and secure place to call home.
Please sign this petition to help push for the implementation of rent caps and protect our communities from the damaging effects of unregulated rent increases.
