The Issue

In Tumwater, a tragic accident claimed the lives of Samantha Denney, her unborn child, and her toddler due to a driver steering in the wrong direction. She left behind a young daughter who was also involved in the accident. This incident has been a grim reminder of the deadly risks posed by wrong-way drivers. Our road systems contribute to such accidents, and it's high time we addressed this issue to prevent future fatalities. We propose the implementation of one-way spike strips that will render a vehicle immobile if it attempts to enter the freeway in the wrong direction.

Wrong-way driving accidents are not isolated incidents. They account for approximately 300 to 400 fatalities in the United States each year, according to the Federal Highway Administration. This represents 1% of the total number of traffic fatalities each year - an alarming figure. Additionally, these crashes tend to be more severe than other types of crashes, as they often result in head-on or opposite-direction sideswipe crashes at high speeds.

We need collectively take a stand to make our roads safer. Putting one-way spike strips at freeway entrances can help prevent these tragic accidents. Samantha, her unborn child, and her toddler should not have died in vain. Let's ensure their memory drives a change in policy to make our roads safer.

It's time to put pressure on our local and national governments to invest in this simple, yet effective, solution. Please sign this petition to demand the implementation of one-way spike strips on our freeways!!

thank you!
