Implement Objective Admissions Examinations in Selective DCPS High Schools

The Issue

For many students, the dream of attending selective DCPS high schools such as Banneker or School Without Walls is hindered by the current admissions process. The reliance on interviews and recommendation letters is inequitable and biased.

Not every family has the ability to perform well in family interviews or teach their children to excel in personal interviews. Many teachers, overburdened already, may not have the time to write recommendation letters for each student. Student potential is overshadowed by these factors that are irrelevant to skills and academic capacities.

In the interest of fairness and transparency, DCPS should institute an objective examination as the admissions criteria for selective high schools. This approach is not novel. New York City’s Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) has been used for years with success, ensuring admission is based solely on academic merit.

The current system perpetuates bias, hinders inclusivity, and excludes promising students who could benefit greatly from such educational opportunities. By adopting an objective admissions examination, we can ensure all students have an equitable chance to pursue quality education at these prestigious institutions.
