Implement Nap Time for High School and College Students

The Issue

As a student, I am part of the 60% of high school and college students who are sleep deprived (National Sleep Foundation). This is not just a personal issue, but a widespread problem that affects our academic performance, mental health, and overall quality of life.

Sleep deprivation in students can lead to lower GPAs because sleep affects concentration, memory and the ability to learn. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has found that about one-third of students report falling asleep in class at least once a week due to lack of sufficient sleep.

In addition to academic consequences, insufficient sleep also leads to various health problems including depression, obesity and cardiovascular disease. It's clear that something needs to change.

We propose the implementation of designated nap times for high schoolers and college students. A short nap during the day can help improve mood, alertness and cognitive performance according to NASA’s research on sleepy military pilots and astronauts.
