Implement Modern Examination Methods in Eller's Accounting Department

The Issue

Eller's Accounting Department is currently using an obsolete system of evaluation - Scantron tests. We believe this approach is outdated and doesn't accurately measure the understanding and analytical capability of our accounting students. Notably, accounting exams are traditionally heavily formula-based. Shifting to an open-book format or allowing cheat sheets would allow students to demonstrate their genuine understanding and application of these formulas, instead of simply memorizing them for a scannable test. Moreover, the reduction of reliance on Scantron tests implies that grading would return to the hands of educators, ensuring feedback is precise and beneficial to the learning experience. It's noteworthy that departments which have embraced modern assessment methods have seen decreases in failure rates, contributing to overall educational success (Educational Research Review, 2018). We call upon Eller's Accounting Department to replace Scantron tests with a more progressive, student-friendly examination approach to benefit both the students and the department.
