Implement Middle Eastern Culture and Arab Traditions into Oak Lawn, IL Curriculums

Implement Middle Eastern Culture and Arab Traditions into Oak Lawn, IL Curriculums
The Issue
I am a resident of Oak Lawn, IL, where half of our students in District 122 identify as Arab, Muslim or North African (MENA). Despite this significant demographic presence, our educational system does not reflect the rich cultural heritage that these students bring to the table. Our curriculums remain largely devoid of any meaningful representation of Middle Eastern culture and Arab traditions. This lack of representation is not only disheartening but also detrimental to the development and self-esteem of MENA students who feel unseen and unheard in their own classrooms.
The importance of cultural diversity in education cannot be overstated. Research has shown that when students see their culture represented in what they learn, it can significantly boost their academic performance and overall well-being (source: American Psychological Association). Moreover, incorporating diverse cultures into curriculums fosters mutual respect among students from different backgrounds.
Oak Lawn's curriculum should mirror its diverse population. It's time for us to acknowledge the rich tapestry that makes up our community by integrating Middle Eastern culture and Arab traditions into our schools' curriculums.
Let us ensure every student feels seen, heard, respected - let us make sure every student knows they belong. Sign this petition to urge Oak Lawn school district officials to implement Middle Eastern culture and Arab traditions into our curriculums today!
