I'm terrified to send my daughter to school because she was once threatened with a knife on campus. Alarmingly, I also know people affected by the shooting that took place at Florida State University. It's clear to me and many others that we urgently need measures taken to ensure the safety of our students. In light of these disturbing incidents, I am calling for the implementation of metal detectors in all public, private, and college schools across the country.

The numbers suggest a frightening trend. According to the Center for Homeland Defense and Security, the year 2018 saw 97 incidents of gun violence in schools, a shocking record high since 1970. Furthermore, the National School Safety and Security Services reports that while most instances of school violence involve lesser weapons like knives, these incidents can still have devastating psychological effects on students. This makes one thing clear: We need to take comprehensive steps to make our schools safer.

By implementing metal detectors in schools, we can help detect and deter the presence of weapons. The metal detectors will ensure that each student, staff member, or visitor is checked before entering, promoting a safer environment for all students.

Let's transform our fear and sorrow into action. The implementation of metal detectors in schools is a concrete step we can take to prevent the unthinkable from happening.
