As a concerned parent with children attending public schools in Volusia County, Florida, I'm deeply worried about their safety. We live in an era where unforeseen security threats in educational institutions have become all too frequent. While we hope never to encounter such incidents, it is our responsibility to prepare for and prevent them to the best of our ability.

Installing metal detectors at the main entrances of public schools is an important step toward improving school safety. Even one incident is too many when it comes to the safety of our children.

Metal detectors at entrance points would go a long way in detecting any weapon or dangerous items that a student, a staff member, or a visitor may attempt to bring into the schools. These devices will not solve all issues associated with school violence, but they represent an important component of a comprehensive approach to school safety. 

Through this petition, we are calling upon the Volusia County School District and Board of Education to pledge their support for security enhancements. Education should breed a sense of safety, not fear. Let us provide our children with a supportive and safe learning environment.
