The Issue

Experiencing menstruation comes with severe pain, fatigue, and discomfort that make it challenging to perform everyday tasks. Yet despite these widespread experiences, most workplaces and educational institutions neglect to provide the necessary leave or accommodations for menstrual health. At work, pushing through these days without support might result in decreased productivity, higher stress levels, and ultimately have a negative effect on women's health and job satisfaction.

According to a study by the American Academy of Family Physicians, up to 90% of women experience some form of premenstrual symptoms, and 20% to 40% of them suffer from premenstrual syndrome that significantly hampers their routine work or home life activities. This staggering statistic highlights the necessity for a menstrual leave policy that acknowledges and respects women's health needs.

Countries like Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan have already taken strides by implementing menstrual leave policies, setting an example that has proven beneficial for both employees and employers by reducing absenteeism and improving overall workplace morale. Recognizing the natural process of menstruation and its impact, and having policies in place, actively demonstrates inclusivity and progressive social attitudes.

We propose implementing a menstrual leave policy that allows individuals suffering from menstrual discomfort to avail a minimum of two paid leave days per menstrual cycle. Employers can initially pilot this policy over a six-month period, during which data on its impact on both productivity and employee well-being can be collected. This proposal does not only aim to provide comfort during difficult days but also strives to create an understanding and supportive work culture.

Let's call upon businesses and educational institutions to address this pressing need by introducing menstrual leave policies, thereby taking a crucial step towards gender equality and woman's health advocacy in the workplace. Sign this petition to urge decision-makers to implement these necessary changes and make workplaces more inclusive and supportive for all.
