As students of the University of Kentucky, we have witnessed firsthand the distress and discomfort caused by protesters on our campus. Many of us, particularly those from minority populations, have been targeted and harassed under the guise of free speech. It is a personal issue that affects our sense of safety and inclusivity within our own educational environment.

In recent years, there has been an increase in protests across college campuses nationwide. According to a 2020 study by Georgetown University's Center for Free Speech and Inquiry, out of 487 colleges surveyed, nearly one-third reported experiencing at least one protest on their campus (source: Georgetown University's Center for Free Speech and Inquiry). This trend is not isolated to other universities; it is happening right here in Lexington, KY.

We believe that every student has the right to feel safe on their own campus. Therefore, we are calling upon university authorities to implement mandatory UK Alerts notifying students about the presence and location of protesters on campus. This measure will allow students to make informed decisions about their movements around campus while ensuring they can avoid areas where they may feel unsafe or uncomfortable.
