Implement Mandatory Screening for Vasa Praevia at the 20-Week Ultrasound

The Issue

We lost our little girl, Mollie, in September 2020 due to undiagnosed vasa praevia, a condition where abnormal fetal blood vessels cross or run near the internal opening of the uterus. This can cause a rupture in the vessels during delivery, leading to significant blood loss in the baby. Our tragedy was compounded by the knowledge that vasa praevia is easily detectable through an ultrasound scan, and such a routine test could have saved Mollie's life.

Vasa praevia screening doesn't require additional time at the 20-week ultrasound, yet it isn't universally implemented. If it had been part of our 20-week ultrasound, Mollie could have been delivered by C-Section at 37 weeks, a standard procedure for diagnosed vasa praevia cases, and would be with us today. This is a needless risk, when various studies suggest that vasa praevia may occur in about 1 in every 2,500 pregnancies (Cedars-Sinai).

We, Mollie's parents, ask you to consider mandatory screening for vasa praevia at the 20-week ultrasound. Early detection could save countless lives and spare parents the unbearable grief of losing a child. Your signature can make a significant difference in preventing these avoidable tragedies. Please join us in advocating for change; sign the petition today.
