The Issue

Every year, millions of students in India enter Classes 9 and 10, marking the onset of intense academic pressure, board exam anxiety, and critical adolescent transitions. While our education system prepares them academically, it leaves them utterly unaware of how to manage the emotional and psychological stress that accompanies this crucial phase of development.

As a nation, we focus vehemently on academic excellence, often sidelining the mental well-being of our students. Recent studies reveal that approximately 86% of Indian students face time-related pressure, with 66% enduring high anxiety levels primarily due to examinations. Yet, there is a glaring absence of structured support to help them manage emotional distress or understand mental health issues.

This unaddressed gap poses significant risks in terms of increased mental health issues, which can further lead to severe consequences such as depression, self-harm, and even suicide. The National Crime Records Bureau of India reports disturbing statistics, showing that over 10,000 students died by suicide in 2019 due to exam-related stress. These numbers are not only heartbreaking but signify an urgent need for intervention at the educational policy level.

By integrating mandatory 'Mental Health & Emotional Literacy Education' into the curriculum for Classes 9 and 10, we can equip students with essential skills to manage stress, emotional challenges, and relationship dynamics. This program would include teaching relaxation techniques, promoting positive thinking, and providing tools for emotional intelligence.

Moreover, this initiative should involve collaboration with mental health professionals who can train educators, allowing them to create a supportive and understanding environment within schools. Schools should also establish counseling services where students can seek guidance without stigmatization.

Let's prioritize our students' mental health as much as their academic success. Sign this petition to urge the Ministry of Education in India to take immediate action by making mental health and emotional literacy education mandatory for Classes 9 and 10. Your support can help initiate a transformative change in India's educational framework, ensuring a healthier, more balanced generation to lead our future.
