The Issue

This petition stems from a heart-wrenching personal narrative: the untimely and tragic loss of a daughter, Kaitlin DuToit, who was instantly killed in a car accident on the 20th of December, 2024. An inattentive driver, turning left, crashed into Kaitlin's motorcycle, extinguishing a life full of promise. Despite his grave error, he only received a civil charge and did not undergo any blood tests.

If the driver was intoxicated, only a blood test could provide definite proof. This lack of mandatory accountability can indirectly sustain such heartbreaking tragedy. It's high time our laws reflect the seriousness of such matters. After all, more than 32,000 people are killed in auto accidents every year, but only a fraction of oversight applied (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data).

Our proposed law would expand the investigation if a death occurs in an auto accident to include compulsory criminal investigation, blood tests, and a comprehensive evaluation of the involved driver's record and traffic tickets in the past 24 months. This will ensure that negligent drivers are held accountable and are subjected to the full scope of justice. Such a law would not only honor Kaitlin's memory but protect countless lives in the future.

We implore lawmakers to consider the gravity of these accidents and revise our laws accordingly. In memory of Kaitlin and every life lost on the road, we ask you to support this vital reform. Please, sign this petition.
