Implement mandatory FND training for first responders

The Issue

I've lived with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) for years, encountering countless misguided interactions with emergency medical technicians (EMTs), firefighters, and police officers. Too often, these dedicated professionals have never even heard of FND, leading them to mistake my symptoms for epilepsy or question their authenticity altogether. This gap in understanding not only causes immense personal distress, but can also lead to be unnecessarily medicated.

FND is a neurological disorder where there is no structural impairment in the brain. It mirrors conditions like epilepsy with symptoms such as seizures, spasms, and tremors. However, unlike epilepsy, there is no abnormal brain activity evident on an EEG. This difference is vital to recognize, because it directly impacts medical treatment and emergency responses.

Unfortunately, FND is frequently misunderstood and gravely underestimated. Studies show that FND affects as many as 4 to 12 people per 100,000 each year. Still, public awareness and understanding remain alarmingly low, particularly among first responders. This lack of knowledge can result in inappropriate treatment, further stigma, and diminished well-being for those affected.

To address this critical issue, I am urging relevant authorities to implement mandatory training on FND for all first responders, including EMTs, firefighters, and police officers. This training should encompass understanding FND's symptoms, recognizing it during emergencies, and learning appropriate response strategies. By equipping our first responders with this knowledge, we can ensure safer and more effective interactions and care for individuals with FND.

The safety and dignity of individuals with FND should not be compromised due to a lack of awareness. We need your support to bring about this change. Please sign this petition to urge authorities to mandate FND training for first responders. Together, we can enhance understanding and improve the response to FND in emergencies, ultimately making a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected.
