Implement Mandatory Driving Tests for UK Citizens Over 63

The Issue

I am one of countless drivers on the road who, time and again, has experienced near-misses due to the poor driving habits of some older motorists. In just the last month, I've narrowly avoided collisions with three elderly drivers. They failed to use indicators and didn't appear to check their mirrors before darting across lanes. There were times when they couldn't maintain their lane position and often drove at a mere 25 miles per hour on a 70 mile-per-hour road. Lack of speed can be as hazardous as excessive speed, contributing significantly to near accidents. This is not just my issue but a wider public health concern.

Research suggests that as we get older, our driving capabilities may deteriorate, leading to increased risks on the road. According to the UK Department for Transport, in 2019, drivers aged 60 and over were involved in 34% of all traffic accidents, and this percentage has been on a rising trend.

The wellbeing of all road users, young and old, should be a top priority. Thus, considering the evidence, we propose a nationwide policy requiring all UK drivers over the age of 63 to retake their practical and theoretical driving tests. This will ensure that they continue to demonstrate the necessary competence and adherence to road safety regulations, safeguarding everyone on the road.

It's time to act for the safety of all on our roads. The health and lives of numerous drivers are at stake. Join this cause, and demand safety for all. Please sign and share this petition.
