Implement mandatory driving tests for foreign nationals in the UK

The Issue

My daughter is currently learning to drive, I've noticed that the behavior of other road users has become increasingly concerning. This is why I was shocked to discover that immigrants to the UK are not required to take a full UK driving test in order to drive on our roads, but instead are allowed up to a year to drive with their foreign licenses. This practice poses significant dangers, particularly for children, the elderly, and pedestrians traversing our roads. The recent case of pensioner Susan Whittles who was killed by a Nigerian national who had twice failed his UK driving test has highlighted this loophole in the law.

Government guidance allows people from countries where driving standards are not considered equivalent to the UK, including Nigeria, to drive for up to a year after becoming a resident while they obtain a full British licence.

Coroner Lorraine Harris warned the system creates a stark contrast with UK learners, who must be supervised and display L-plates.

While these individuals may be competent drivers in their home countries, the unfamiliarity with UK road rules can lead to dangerous situations on the road. I've personally witnessed near-misses and poor driving decisions that could have been avoided if the drivers had a thorough understanding of UK traffic laws and conditions. These potential hazards not only threaten those learning to drive, like my daughter, but also compromise the safety of everyone on the road.

It's crucial for the safety of all UK residents that we require immigrants to pass a comprehensive UK driving test before they are allowed to drive on our roads. This regulation would ensure that all drivers are familiar with our unique road signs, conditions, and driving etiquette, thus reducing accidents and enhancing road safety for everyone.

Let's raise our voices to urge the UK government to amend driving laws for immigrants and foreign nationals. By implementing this change, we can create safer streets and protect vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly. Please sign this petition to demand that immigrants to the UK are to be required to pass a full driving test before being permitted to drive full time in the country.
