Implement Mandatory 'Bad Cop' Registry for Officers with History of Violence
The Issue
The loss of Sonya Massey, a victim of unregulated police brutality has once again brought this country’s history of police brutality to the forefront.. Her life was abruptly taken by an officer in what can only be described as an extrajudicial execution. Just one more incident that underlines the urgent need for corrective measures in our law enforcement institutions. We believe that the Department Of Justice should create a nationwide, mandatory "Bad Cop" registry. This registry should meticulously record the names of any officers whose careers are riddled with verified incidents of civil rights violations, undue violence, and police brutality.
Much like the existing registries designed to monitor sex offenders, this "Bad Cop" registry will serve a critical public safety purpose. It will ensure that individuals who have demonstrated a misuse of their power cannot cause any more harm within the law enforcement arena for the rest of their lives. Police officers hold a significant place of trust in our society; their role is to protect us, not harm us.
Studies have demonstrated that just a small fraction of officers contribute to a disproportionate amount of police brutality cases. One study also showed that a history of complaints is a good indicator of being a danger to the community even when off the clock. This illustrates a pressing reality: reform can, and should, begin by restricting these individuals from having further chances to perpetuate harm.
Remembering Sonya Massey, and countless others who have fallen prey to uncontrolled law enforcement violence, we implore you to support the creation of this "Bad Cop" registry. It is one significant step towards achieving accountability and justice. Please sign the petition, and help us bring this vital matter to light.
