The Issue

In the wake of a personal tragedy, this plea comes amidst a wave of heartbreaking suicides among our young students in Boone County School District in Kentucky. On December 2nd, 2024, our community lost a bright 13-year-old girl to suicide. Her name is Audree Megan Heine and her story is not an isolated case. Other families, students, and educators in our district grapple with similar tragedies.

This petition, therefore, calls upon the Boone County School Board to recognize the urgency of this situation and kick-start effective suicide prevention strategies.

While our schools are places of learning, they should also be spaces of emotional and psychological support. We need to enrich our students' environment with accessible resources, including the possibility for them to reach out anonymously and discuss their feelings. Enhancing in-person support through trained counselors and organized support groups can allow our students to understand they are not alone in their struggles.

Furthermore, educator training needs a revamp. Our teachers interact with students every day - they are in a powerful position to identify and, intervene and provide help. Sensitivity training, moreover, should be mandatory for dealing with the aftermath of such tragic incidents, facilitating healing and recovery within the school community.

As a community, we owe it to our children to create a safe, supportive environment. Let's unite and make our voices heard. It's time Boone County Schools become better equipped to protect our children's lives. Please sign the petition demanding effective suicide prevention in our schools.
