Implement Legislation for Job Security Following Mental Health Diagnoses

The Issue

My name is not important but my story is. I experienced a mental health crisis. The diagnoses were PTSD, dissociation, amnesia, and depression - and they all fell on me like a weight I never imagined. Instead of understanding something might be wrong, I was asked to resign. I had no understanding of what I was doing, my mind clouded by the very conditions that has led me here.

Such situations are far from isolated. Like me, an alarming number of individuals are being asked to step down from their jobs during times when they are least fit to make such crucial decisions. These are hardworking individuals who are abruptly stripped off their employment due to unfortunate mental health conditions.

According to the World Health Organization, 264 million people globally suffer from depression, and many of them are part of the workforce. Yet, the structural support to handle such situations remains precarious, often leading to unnecessary loss of jobs. It is, therefore, of utmost importance to pass a law which allows any person diagnosed with a mental health condition within weeks of leaving a job the right to reclaim their position, essentially having their resignation voided.

By removing the fear of job loss during mental health crises, we can create a stronger support structure for those in need at workplaces. It is not just about good employment practice or public health, but also about basic human decency.

This situation needs immediate attention. Be a part of this change. Support this push for job security amidst mental health challenges. Sign the petition. Stand by the countless individuals who, amidst their struggles, are viewed as a liability rather than a human being in need of support.
