Implement Legal Framework for 'Paper Abortions' to Respect Men's Choice

Implement Legal Framework for 'Paper Abortions' to Respect Men's Choice
The Issue
We believe in the fundamental right of every individual to choose parenthood. Just as women have the right to opt out of motherhood, men should have a similar choice. The concept of 'Paper Abortions' proposes that men, during pregnancy, should have the option to legally relinquish financial and legal responsibilities associated with fatherhood if they do not wish to become fathers. This proposal is not about avoiding responsibilities but about ensuring equal rights and choices for both genders.
Currently, women have control over their reproductive decisions post-conception, whereas men often face obligatory financial responsibilities even when they've expressed their unwillingness to become fathers. In the UK, as of the quarter ending September 2023, there was a significant amount of unpaid child maintenance through the Child Maintenance Service (CMS). Specifically, £342.3 million in child maintenance was due, with £263.2 million arranged via the Direct Pay service and £79.1 million through the Collect and Pay service. Of the amount due through Collect and Pay, £57.5 million was paid, leaving £21.6 million unpaid. Since the CMS was introduced in 2012, the total unpaid child maintenance has accumulated to £590.2 million, representing 8% of all maintenance due since the service began. This statistic includes a substantial proportion from fathers, some of whom may not have willingly chosen this path.
This petition seeks to amend family law to respect men's decisions, akin to the consideration given to women's decisions. It advocates for an open dialogue on 'Paper Abortions,' aiming to establish balanced reproductive rights and reduce potential social and economic burdens.
We urge lawmakers and policymakers to take this proposal seriously—because equality and choice matter. Please sign this petition if you support equal rights and freedom of choice in parenthood.
