The Issue

As a dedicated professional working in our hard-pressed but exceptional NHS service, I witness firsthand, the profound influence basic health instruction could have on our nation's wellbeing. This petition is driven by my personal experience, formed not through abstract assumptions, but through concrete evidence that fills our hospitals every day.

Having a population educated on basic healthcare, from CPR to medicine management, minor injury care to techniques for stopping blood loss, is not just a nice-to-have. It could potentially save countless lives and significantly reduce the strain on our healthcare system. Yet, such crucial knowledge is missing from our school curricula. This begs the question: why is Health Education not a compulsory subject at the GCSE level and optional at A-Level?

According to the Red Cross, 95% of adults wouldn't be able to provide first aid in an emergency. Yet, when taught, 93% of children feel confident to provide first aid support (British Red Cross). Additionally, inappropriate use of NHS services for minor ailments reportedly costs around £2bn per year (NHS England).

Making Health Education a mandatory subject at GCSE with optional A-Level will not only empower individuals with critical lifesaving skills but also reduce avoidable pressures on our NHS.

Additionally, exposure to health education through school will encourage children to follow healthcare careers.  GCSE and A level qualifications, if properly developed, could cut years off nurse and Doctor training times.

For the future health of our nation, and to safeguard the sustainability of our healthcare system, I implore educational policymakers to make a change. Let's catalyse the integration of Health Education into our country’s curriculum, and equip our future generation with the knowledge to be proactive, not reactive, in matters of health. Please sign this petition and promote the importance of Health Education.
