As a military veteran, I know first-hand how difficult the transition from service to civilian life can be. Many veterans face significant challenges with their mental and physical wellbeing after leaving the Armed Forces. We serve our nation diligently, but once we transition back to civilian life, the support we receive is often inadequate. While we are issued a UK Armed Forces Veteran Card, it offers little practical support despite the sacrifices we have made.

One significant step towards acknowledging and supporting our service would be providing free access to all council-owned gyms and leisure centres across the United Kingdom for veterans who hold a valid HM Armed Forces Veteran Card. Regular access to exercise facilities can be transformative, not only for improving physical health but also for bolstering mental wellbeing. Exercise has long been known to reduce stress levels, improve mood, and foster vital social connections.

While some councils have already taken the commendable step of offering free gym memberships to veterans, the unfortunate reality is that access depends largely on postcode. This inequity means that many veterans are left without the support they need simply because of where they live. Veterans should not be subjected to a postcode lottery for accessing services that are crucial to their health and wellbeing.

By implementing a nationwide policy that guarantees free gym memberships in all council-owned facilities, we can bridge this gap and make a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of veterans. These men and women have sacrificed so much for our country; ensuring their access to these facilities is a small but significant way to express our gratitude.
