As a small business owner, I have experienced first-hand the struggles and challenges that come with maintaining a business. One of these challenges is the unfair calculation of business rates, which are currently based on rateable value rather than actual rent paid. This system puts an undue burden on small businesses like mine, often leading to financial strain and even closure.

In the UK alone, there are 5.9 million small businesses contributing to over 50% of all private sector turnover as per Federation of Small Businesses statistics (2020). However, the current method for calculating business rates threatens this vital part of our economy.

By basing these rates on actual rent paid instead of rateable value, we can create a fairer system that supports rather than hinders small businesses. This change would not only benefit individual entrepreneurs but also stimulate local economies and promote job creation.
