As a regular TikTok user, my platform is suffering. My account is barely growing, and my videos receive negligible views. This predicament is not unique to me but is a widespread issue caused by an algorithm that favors celebrities and verified accounts.

TikTok was initially appreciated for its egalitarian nature, where anyone, regardless of their social status, could strike viral success. However, the current state of the platform tells a different story. With the influx of celebrities and verified accounts, everyday users are finding it increasingly challenging to gain traction. The rich get richer scenario seems to be played out in TikTok as well, with celebrities and verified users sucking up the majority of views, and by extension, shrinking the opportunity for lesser-known creators.

The app’s algorithms also seem to disproportionately boost these popular accounts. Recent reports indicate that videos from verified accounts are more likely to appear on users' "For You" pages, despite the user's viewing habits.

It's not about removing celebrities or verified accounts completely, but about creating a balanced platform where talented creators are not eclipsed by overexposure of already popular figures. We are calling on TikTok to review its algorithm and implement a more democratic system that gives every user an equal opportunity to be seen and appreciated.

Building an inclusive algorithm is essential, ensuring the platform remains a creative outlet for varied voices rather than an echo chamber of celebrity content.
