The Issue

I recently enrolled in a plumbing course that I was really excited about. The classes were scheduled from 5 PM to 9 PM, perfect for someone like me who works during the day. However, I finish my work at 4:30 PM, and by the time I pack up and make my way to the college, it's impossible to make it on time, especially with traffic. It’s frustrating and feels unfair because the college mentioned they no longer offer adult courses in the evening due to funding cuts.

This situation is not unique to me. I'm sure many others who want to upgrade their skills face similar challenges, balancing work commitments and personal self-improvement. Many adults wish to pursue trade skills like plumbing, electrical works, carpentry, or even new technologies to enhance their careers or perhaps change career paths altogether, but the lack of evening courses makes it nearly impossible.

Trade courses are crucial because they provide practical skills that are in high demand. The UK construction industry alone is facing a severe skills shortage, with reports indicating that more than 168,000. By not offering evening courses, colleges limit the pool of qualified tradespeople and miss out on helping to bridge this gap.

We propose allocating proper funding to support evening trade courses across all colleges in the UK. It not only empowers individuals to pursue their dreams and improve their economic situation but also addresses the broader economic need for skilled workers in essential industries.

Funding bodies and educational institutes need to recognize the importance of evening courses for adult learners. We need flexible learning paths that accommodate our busy lives. Let's make education more accessible, flexible, and inclusive for everyone willing to learn whilst doing there own job and want to put that effort in even when they been at work all day older adults have more responsibilities which makes them more urged to get on and do it.

Ive noticed also from a number amount of tutors that young adults who have left school dont acctually want to go college they just go to college so there parents get the benifit they need which makes young learners not want to do a course which is an absolute waste of money.

Sign this petition to urge the government and educational institutions to reinstate and enhance funding for evening adult trade courses. Let's open doors of opportunity for everyone, regardless of their work schedule.
