Implement Comprehensive Solutions to the Massachusetts Housing Crisis

The Issue

Addressing the problem:

The state of Massachusetts is currently facing a severe housing crisis. This severe housing crisis is affecting families and individuals that are renting houses across Massachusetts. This crisis is characterized by high costs, safety concerns, lack of rent security, and unregulated rent increases. Additionally, the financial burden associated with moving in has become increasingly restrictive for many residents. “As of December 2023, the annual rental growth stood at 3.32 percent. Among the different states in the U.S., Massachusetts ranks as one of the most expensive rental markets” (Statista, 2023). There are no statewide regulations on rent increases in Massachusetts. This lack of regulation leaves renters vulnerable to sudden and potentially unaffordable rent hikes. Renters also face insecurity due to the absence of comprehensive laws protecting them from unjust evictions.

Our goal:

The current situation calls for immediate action from our policymakers. We urge them to address these issues by implementing comprehensive solutions such as affordable housing initiatives, stronger tenant protections against arbitrary evictions and unfair rent increases, as well as policies that alleviate the financial burden associated with moving into a new home. The best remedy to this issue is to call on policymakers to implement rent control and regulations across Massachusetts. Implementing policies around preventing large rent increases as well as the amount of money required up front to rent a unit could be life changing for MA residents.

How can you contribute?

We call upon all residents of Massachusetts who believe in fair access to safe and affordable housing to sign this petition. Let's urge our lawmakers to take decisive action towards resolving this pressing issue.
