The Issue

Every part of our culture, how we dress, walk, talk, and express ourselves is influenced by a rich history that deserves as much recognition and respect as white / European culture.

Yet, despite its profound impact, Black history is often marginalized, glossed over in our education system. This is NOT just a disservice to Black students, but to all students who are deprived of a complete and true understanding of our nation's past.

The brutal system of chattel slavery and it’s lasting legacy have profoundly shaped American society. Millions of black African people were forcibly migrated, stripped of their humanity, and compelled to build the economic foundation of the Americas.

Despite slavery's formal abolition with the 13th Amendment, the systemic racism it birthed persists, influencing modern political, economic, and social structures. We cannot ignore this history if we are serious about tackling the systemic inequalities still faced today.

Implementing a comprehensive Black history curriculum in schools across the United States is a crucial step towards fostering understanding and empathy. By educating our youth about the atrocities and triumphs of Black Americans, we challenge ignorance and prejudice at its roots. This education isn't just for Black students, it benefits everyone by encouraging a more inclusive and empathetic society.

We advocate for mandatory courses on Black history that cover key events like the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the Middle Passage, and the Civil Rights Movement, alongside celebrated achievements and cultural contributions. This curriculum should highlight the resilience and resourcefulness of Black communities throughout history. Teaching our children the truth encourages them to paint their own future informed by a real understanding of our collective past.

By signing this petition, you join a movement that demands real change. Let us ensure that every student in the U.S learns the full history, one that recognizes both the pain and the beauty intrinsically woven into our nation's fabric.

Sign now to support implementing Black history education in ALL U.S. schools, because understanding our past is essential to forging a more united future, no matter the race and/or ethnicity of anyone.
