As a regular bicyclist in Ashburn, Virginia, I’ve experienced firsthand the perils of navigating our roads. Bicyclists are not permitted on sidewalks, yet it's perilous to coexist on roads packed with impatient drivers. Encounters with road rage, rebukes, and personally threatening situations have become a common occurrence. It's not only concerning for my safety, but also for the countless other bicyclists traversing these roads.

Loudon County Parkway, Mooreview Parkway, and Claiborne Parkway are key connectors to the Washington and Old Dominion Trail, a significant regional commuting and leisure route. However, the absence of dedicated bike lanes on these roads make it hazardous for bike riders to access this trail. In a country where bike fatalities represent around 2% of all traffic deaths, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, separate bike lanes can significantly improve safety, as per numerous studies in cities globally.

By implementing dedicated bike lanes, we contribute not only to the well-being of interested cyclists, but also to a more sustainable and inclusive transportation system. Bike lanes can reduce traffic congestion and environmental impact while promoting healthier life choices within our Ashburn community.
