Implement Bible Studies As An Elective In Public Schools

Implement Bible Studies As An Elective In Public Schools
The Issue
As individuals deeply moved by the influence of the Bible on Western civilization, we recognize its profound effects on our culture, law, ethics, and philosophy. Renowned as the most-read book globally, the Bible sees up to 100 million copies sold or donated annually, with approximately 20 million copies sold each year in the U.S. alone.
The Bible was among the precious cargo aboard the Mayflower on its landmark journey in 1620, endeavoring to shape a new world. Moreover, our Founding Fathers acknowledged its political and legal models, such as republicanism and the separation of powers.
However, despite its significance and the light it has shed on our cultural heritage, the Bible is conspicuously missing from our public school curriculum. While we respect the importance of maintaining separation between church and state, we believe the educational benefits of studying this text as part of a literature curriculum cannot be ignored.
Teaching the Bible as an elective, not as religious indoctrination but as an exploration of its influence on our society and development, would encourage students to discover and understand the roots of Western civilization. It's crucial for young generations to comprehend the cultural, historical, and literary contexts of this monumental book, which provides perspective on much of the literature, philosophy, and history they are already studying.
Therefore, we petition for the Bible to be made available and taught as an elective in our public schools, recognizing its academic, as well as its religious, importance. We urge educators and policymakers to consider this thoughtful proposition for the enhancement of our educational system.
Please sign this petition to support a well-rounded education that includes the study of the Bible as a significant piece of our cultural heritage.
