Implement an “Elopement Alert” for Children with Autism and Special Needs

The Issue

Elopement, or wandering, is a common and dangerous behavior among children with autism and other special needs. Current alert systems, like the AMBER Alert, are not designed to address these unique situations, often leading to critical delays that put vulnerable children at greater risk. This petition calls for the implementation of a specialized “Elopement Alert” tailored specifically to children with autism and special needs, enabling faster, more targeted responses when time is of the essence.

Children with autism are prone to elopement for reasons like sensory overload, a desire for adventure, or seeking comfort in familiar locations. Unlike traditional AMBER Alerts that focus on abductions, these situations require different community awareness and immediate action. The absence of a dedicated alert system often results in delays, missed opportunities, and, tragically, the loss of life. We cannot afford to wait until another family endures such preventable heartbreak.

An “Elopement Alert” would prioritize:

 1. Faster Activation: Speed is critical when it comes to elopement. This alert system should have streamlined criteria for quick issuance, bypassing unnecessary delays that occur when trying to fit the situation into existing AMBER Alert guidelines.
 2. Relevant Information: The alert would provide critical details tailored to autism and special needs cases, such as non-verbal communication, attraction to water, or specific behaviors the child may display.
 3. Community Awareness: The public lacks awareness about elopement in special needs children. This alert would educate communities on what to look for and how to respond when a child with autism or other developmental challenges goes missing.

Time is crucial, and the unique needs of these children cannot be effectively addressed within the current AMBER Alert system. By creating a dedicated “Elopement Alert,” we can save lives, prevent unnecessary tragedies, and better protect some of our most vulnerable community members.

I am a mother to a 4-year-old non-verbal autistic boy who is known as a 'wanderer'. Living with this reality, I'm relentlessly gripped by a fear that holds many parents of autistic children hostage - our children's propensity to elope and face unimaginable dangers. Traditional safety measures like alarms, window locks or even GPS trackers often fall short of expectations, and the reality is much more complex than commonly understood.

Our children lack sense of danger and spatial awareness, which can potentially guide them towards life-threatening situations. Therefore, we are advocating for the implementation of an "Elopement Alert" - a specifically designed rapid response system to cater to children with special needs when they go missing.

It's not just about being quicker than Amber alerts; this new alert system targets the unique needs of these special children and provides a different kind of warning information. The risk of our children wandering off is not exclusively to water sources, unlike popular belief, but is more profound and complicated.

Regrettably, every year, hundreds of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) lose their lives due to incidents related to elopement. The National Autism Association reports that between 2009-2011, accidental drowning accounted for 91% death in children with ASD ages 14 and younger, after wandering/elopement.

Implementing the "Elopement Alert" is more than a desire - it's an urgent necessity. We need your support to make this change. A faster alert system with specialized warning information can save many lives and potentially help prevent tragic deaths.
