Across urban landscapes, waste burning has emerged as a significant environmental and public health problem. This practice not only exacerbates air pollution, causing harmful and disease-causing pollutants to be released into the atmosphere, but also contributes to climate change by increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, in our city, waste burning incidences are rampant, and only set to increase in the upcoming winter.

Pune has a grievance redressal mechanism, where complaints can be lodged via a mobile application, whatsapp, phone call and a dashboard, but it is ineffective due to delayed response time and resulting non-enforcement of fines for waste burning. The Pune Air Action Hub conducted a study of these complaints and identified clear gaps in this system. With winters approaching, burning incidences are only going to increase and add to the alarming air pollution in the city. 

We envision a city where every resident can breathe clean air and enjoy an environment free from the harmful effects of waste burning.
