SUNY Cortland, a leading institution in the State University of New York system, is known for its comprehensive range of programs. However, one crucial program missing from their offerings is an American Sign Language (ASL) minor. ASL is the third most commonly used language in the United States (Gallaudet University), and offering this as a minor would not only benefit students wishing to expand their communication skills but also contribute to inclusivity and diversity on campus. This addition could open doors for students into various fields such as education, healthcare, social work where ASL skills are highly valued. We believe that SUNY Cortland can lead by example in promoting linguistic diversity and inclusion by instituting an ASL minor.
