Implement American Sign Language Education in Queensbury Middle School

The Issue

Nearly 20% of the global population is comprised of individuals who are deaf or mute. This significant portion of our community faces daily challenges due to communication barriers. One such challenge is the simple act of going to a grocery store, getting a haircut, or ordering food at a drive-through. These everyday tasks become daunting when there's a lack of understanding and empathy from those who can hear.

Our children should be taught how to communicate with everyone in their community, including those who cannot hear. By introducing American Sign Language (ASL) education in schools for children aged 12 and up, we can foster an inclusive environment where everyone feels understood and respected.

Children are quick learners; they have the ability to grasp new languages faster than adults. By teaching them ASL at an early age, we're not just equipping them with another language skill but also instilling empathy towards the deaf community.

In addition to this, it's important to remember that some children may experience hearing loss or may be born deaf themselves. Providing ASL education would ensure these kids don't feel left out and can communicate effectively with their peers.

Let's make our society more inclusive by ensuring that every child has access to ASL education from age 12 onwards. Please sign this petition if you believe in equal opportunities for all members of our society regardless of their hearing abilities.
