We are residents of Waldrift, Vereeniging, South Africa, and like many others in our community, we have been deeply affected by the constant attacks by criminals. The fear and trauma that we live with every day is unbearable. Our neighbourhood has become a hotbed for crime and insecurity.

In 2020 alone, South Africa recorded over 1.5 million incidences of housebreaking affecting approximately 5.8% of households across the country (Statistics South Africa). In our local context in Waldrift, we have seen an alarming rise in these numbers.

We believe that implementing an access control system and gating our community can significantly reduce these incidents. This approach has proven successful elsewhere; gated communities have reported fewer break-ins due to increased security measures (International Journal of Police Science & Management).

We are not asking for a fortress but merely more effective measures to ensure our safety within our homes - something every citizen deserves.

Our plea is directed towards the Emfuleni Local Municipality to take immediate action on this matter. We urge them to consider our proposal seriously as it directly impacts the lives of all residents here in Waldrift.
