Implement Aboriginal Signage in Significant Areas Around Our School

Implement Aboriginal Signage in Significant Areas Around Our School
The issue
As a member of the Somerton Park SA community in Australia, I have witnessed firsthand the need for inclusivity within our educational institutions. It's personal to me because I believe it's the right thing to do. Our school is a melting pot of diverse cultures, with Aboriginal students making up a portion of our student body, yet, they often feel unwelcome due to lack of representation.
It is crucial that we change this narrative by implementing Aboriginal signage in significant areas around our school. This will not only make our Aboriginal students feel more welcome but also promote cultural awareness among all students and staff members.
According to Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), as of 30 June 2021, there were approximately 983,700 people who identified as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin. This represents about 3.8% of Australia’s total population (ABS). Despite these numbers, representation remains an issue in many areas including education.
These are the ideas that were discussed:
Proposal to;
Rename Key Areas of Our School Campus in Kaurna Laungauge
OR for Indigenous Naming of School Campus Spaces
OR to Embrace Aboriginal Culture Through Campus Naming
By introducing culturally appropriate signage around or in our school premises, we can foster an environment where every student feels valued and respected irrespective their cultural background.
Let us take this step towards creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for all members of our community by signing this petition today!
