This petition stems from a deeply personal and tragic experience. The mother of the petitioner, who was a high risk patient, passed away without any welfare checks. Her absence went unnoticed for two weeks due to the lack of policy requiring medical centers to notify next of kin in such circumstances without written consent. This is an unimaginable grief that no one should have to endure.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. There are countless high risk patients across our nation who could face similar situations due to this gap in our healthcare system's policies. It's crucial that we address this issue urgently.

We propose the implementation of a policy that mandates medical centers and authorities to notify next of kin or relevant authorities when high risk patients miss their appointments or require medical attention, even without written consent. This would ensure timely intervention and potentially save lives.

The current system leaves many vulnerable individuals at risk because it requires written consent before alerting family members or caretakers about missed appointments or health concerns. In many cases, these individuals may not be able to provide such consent due to their health conditions.

 On the 28 th of May 2023 I got a call from her a woman who knew my mother, I did a welfare check and that’s the day my whole world crashed , mum was found lying at her door decomposing , I couldn’t see her, I couldn’t say goodbye. I called the doctors on the Monday demanding answers, why wasn’t I called? They replied that there was no written policy in place. I explained that I thought they had a duty of care given mum was high risk and that when she did not attend her appointment I would have been informed - apparently not. They agreed that a policy should have been in place though – too little-too late. I requested meetings with the clinic but they would not see me.  Ironically the toxicology showed no illegal drugs in her system, only prescription medication. Not long after I received the autopsy, and it broke my heart …

Woman malnourished, emaciated, weighing 34 kgs, her heart gave out and she had pneumonia from long lying on the ground oh and emphysema …. Now I don’t understand how the doctor didn’t intervene ? This doesn’t happen overnight, a stent could have been put in her heart , but was her heart ever checked ? from my understanding NO! I have done research , I have read the doctors handbook which is available online, 

If her doctor had called me or had done a check on the 16th  (her next appointment from her phone text messages ) she may have still been alive we will never know. If a check had been done my mother wouldn’t have been left to decompose the way she did, this wasn’t just my mother this was a mother, a human , a woman with high risk needs and addictions, addictions that were NOT caused by choice. 

I have started this petition to have a policy put in place to notify the next of kin without written consent. I will never have that closure, to have been able to say goodbye to my mother whom I couldn’t even identify her due her decomposing state. I lost a mother and a sister and a child as crazy as that sounds , I would mother my mother it’s all I knew to do growing up.

I have contacted parliament to show them the petition, I need your help if you agree a policy should be put in place.

Before you point the blame at my family and I …. Yes, you can say “well isn’t up to the family to keep an eye on their loved ones”?. I agree to an extent, but the families have lives also, they have their own challenges and turmoils. I am a mother myself, I have priorities and I suffer mental health issues myself from childhood Trauma I needed some me time for my own mental health, also…. I am not a professional therapist , I am not a doctor, I am just a woman, a mother and a daughter who was trying to do the best I could the best way I knew how.

No written policy…. What a joke!
