Implement a Paid Active Travel Coordinator for every School in Glasgow
The Issue
Climate breakdown and air pollution are the silent killers of our generation. According to the World Health Organisation, all schools in Glasgow are in areas with unsafe air quality, subjecting children to harmful pollutants daily.
Children are exposed to between 9-12 times more air pollution when travelling in motorised vehicles, like cars or buses. Active travel, such as walking or cycling, is a simple way not only to reduce air pollution, but to reduce exposure to it. Furthermore, encouraging active travel isn't just about improving the air we breathe: it can aid children's general wellbeing by improving school attainment and combatting obesity. But it requires coordination and time to address the varied needs and challenges of our diverse communities. That's why we must demand a paid active travel coordinator for every school in Glasgow.
These coordinators can develop and run effective campaigns that teach children and parents about the benefits of active travel, and plan safe routes using initiatives like bike and/or walking buses, that support and encourage active travel community-wide.
By tackling air pollution locally, we can make a huge difference to the lives of our children and in generations to come. It's a local solution for a global crisis. Let's make a stand and ensure our children can breathe safely as they grow and learn. Please sign this petition to demand a paid active travel coordinator for every school in Glasgow. Together, we can better our city and safeguard our children's future.
