Implement a Nationwide Vehicle Mileage Tax for Improved Public Transportation

Implement a Nationwide Vehicle Mileage Tax for Improved Public Transportation
The Issue
As a person who deeply cares about efficient transportation infrastructure and its direct impact on our communities, I feel compelled to kick start this petition. Our present system shows a lack of ample funding for public transportation projects such as the Boston North-South Rail Link (which I have a petition for here) and Phoenix-Tucson Amtrak train link (which I have a petition for here). Low gasoline taxes are simply not enough to finance these crucial initiatives that not only facilitate mobility but also bridge socio-economic divides. More importantly, robust public transportation serves our low income communities and fights traffic congestion.
One effective solution to this predicament is the implementation of a vehicle mileage tax nationwide. Currently, vehicle mileage taxes are only implemented in select states, but if taken nationwide, they could provide a valuable financial boost for urban development and public transportation projects.
Therefore, the goal of this petition is to encourage policymakers to consider a nationwide vehicle mileage tax. Such fiscal measures would not only dissuade excessive driving, thus reducing traffic congestion and environmental damage, but could also fund public transportation advances. A nationwide vehicle mileage tax offers an equitable approach to highway funding: those who drive more and therefore cause more wear and tear on our roads, pay more.
Let us stand united in our demand for a fairer, more efficient transportation system. Your signature will send a powerful message to our lawmakers: the time for a nationwide vehicle mileage tax is now. Please sign this petition and support a sustainable and inclusive transportation future.
