Implement a National Sunscreen Program in Australia

Implement a National Sunscreen Program in Australia
The issue
Australia currently holds the unfortunate title of being the global leader in skin cancer. The sun that offers warmth and joy is the same sun that's silently claiming lives in our communities. This heartbreaking reality struck home for me as I stood by helplessly, witnessing four of my beloved family members being diagnosed with Melanoma. Tragically, my sister and father succumbed to this ruthless disease. While my heart brews with the pain of these personal losses, my spirit is unyielding in the fight against this preventable affliction.
Our government has a responsibility to protect its citizens, and this can be tangibly achieved by implementing a National Sunscreen Program. According to the Cancer Council, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70, with the majority of these cases being preventable with proper sun protection measures. Yet, the cost of high SPF sunscreen acts as a barrier for many Australians, limiting their ability to safeguard themselves and their families effectively.
By funding a National Sunscreen Program that provides free SPF 50+ sunscreen to all Australian residents, we can significantly reduce the risk of skin cancer across the nation. Not only is this a proactive approach to healthcare, but it also makes fiscal sense. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports that the direct costs of skin cancer to our healthcare system are astronomical, ballooning to over $400 million annually. Preventative initiatives can alleviate this financial burden while saving lives.
We demand that our government prioritizes the health and safety of its people by taking definitive action against skin cancer. By instituting a funded National Sunscreen Program, Australia has the opportunity to lead by example on the global stage, showing commitment to the well-being of its citizens.
Join me in urging the Australian government to take real and immediate action. This is not just a call for change, but a demand for protection for future generations, standing in solidarity with all those who have suffered at the hands of skin cancer. Sign this petition to advocate for a healthier, safer Australia.
