Implement a maximum temperature limit for schools
The Issue
Imagine sitting in a classroom, in a building that's older than your grandparents, with temperatures soaring to almost 40°C and no relief in sight. That's the reality for students like me. At my school, the old brick walls offer no respite from the heat, and with no air conditioning or fans, the conditions become unbearable. It's not just uncomfortable; it's hazardous to our health.
Recent heatwaves have exacerbated this issue, turning classrooms into ovens where concentration and learning are next to impossible. Furthermore, despite some accommodations being made, such as slightly easing the dress code, the males are still required to wear full tailored trousers —a decision that makes no sense in these sweltering conditions.
Students should not have to choose between their education and their health; pysical and mental. The heat is not just a minor inconvenience; it poses serious risks including heat exhaustion and dehydration. Studies have shown that temperatures above 30°C can impair cognitive function and increase stress levels, making it difficult for students to perform academically.
I am petitioning for the implementation of a maximum temperature limit in schools, where, beyond a certain point, education would continue remotely or accommodations would be significantly upgraded such as shorter days or online school. This change is necessary not only for the well-being of the students but also for staff, who are equally affected by these extreme temperatures.
Countries like France have set precedents by implementing heatwave plans that protect students from these extreme temperatures. It’s time for us to follow suit. By setting a maximum temperature limit, we can ensure that no student is forced to endure unhealthy and distracting classroom environments.
Please sign this petition to urge the authorities to reconsider current policy and prioritize the health and safety of students and staff. By working together, we can create a learning environment conducive to growth and well-being, regardless of the weather conditions.
