The Issue

I plan to get as many signatures and present this to Unicode in hopes of acceptance.

I am a proud Māori and for us, the Tino Rangatiratanga flag is not just a symbol, it is a powerful representation of our culture, our identity and our history. Yet, our flag is not included in the set vocabulary of emojis, a universal language used by billions of people across the globe daily.

This lack of a Māori Flag emoji, a simple pictorial representation, may seem insignificant to some, but isn't it time we recognized the world is a diverse place and took steps to make sure everyone is included? Māori were the first in Aotearoa and worthy of recognition. Not having our flag linked to the language of emojis sends a subtle message of exclusion and that is not acceptable.

In 2015 the Unicode Consortium added various flag emojis to their library, yet the Māori flag was no part of this addition.

Cultural diversity should be celebrated and digital platforms should adapt to reflect this diversity. Having the Māori flag as an emoji would be a small step towards this adaptation, a leap towards promoting inclusivity while recognizing and respecting cultural differences.

Come together and assert the demand for cultural representation. Show your support of a Māori flag emoji. Sign this petition now.
