Implement a Law to Criminalise Unauthorised Filming of Minors at Public Spaces

The Issue

This plea stems from a deeply personal and unsettling experience. One day, while enjoying a peaceful dog walk, a man began filming my three-year-old child at the park. Active attempts to obstruct his camera views did little as he continued to surreptitiously film not only my child, but also the child of a friend who was alone at the park. Despite confronting him, the reprehensible behavior persisted, and distressingly, this man had been reported to the police multiple times for similar instances involving other children. Due to a lack of law enforcement provisions, no legal action could prevent this activity or mandate the deletion of the images.

This profoundly unsettling scenario highlights a major legislative gap. Current laws do not criminalize the act of filming or photographing other people's children in public spaces, such as parks, without parental permission. Moreover, current law enforcement cannot demand to check the device used or delete any such visuals upon parental . Therefore, the need to change the law and introduce stringent penal actions for such actions is indispensable. The law must serve to protect the most vulnerable members of our society - our children. It's time we make it an offense to take images or film other people's children without parental permission in public areas.
